Retirement from Village Hall Committee Kay Gautry and Tony Coker 2022
Members of the Village Hall committee together with regulars at the Tuesday coffee morning met on Tuesday 25 July 2022 to say a special “thank you” to Kay Gautry and Tony Coker as they step down from the Hall Committee after many years of service.
Tony’s service goes back to the days of the old village hall which stood beside the lower church yard. He was a member of a small group of villagers who between them planned, secured the land and finally built the present hall. He has been helping to maintain it ever since.
Kay has been part of the team for over a decade. As bookings secretary she has done a magnificent job arranging bookings, showing people around the hall and preparing the invoices for payment. Not to mention arranging the furniture and doing the cleaning.
They will both be greatly missed by everyone.
Chairman of the Hall Committee, Peter Smerden thanked them on our behalf and presented them both with beautiful and unique plates of Rattery, crafted by Sally Tresidder, the Wobbly Potter here in the village.
Villages in Action Rural Heritage project
Unearth – Discovering the Hidden Histories of Devon’s Rural Communities.
Throughout 2017 Villages in Action worked in Rattery on an exciting, new heritage project called ‘Unearth’. Village in Action (ViA) is the rural touring scheme for Devon – that means that they organise performances and projects to take place in villages from East Devon to West Devon, and from Mid Devon to South Hams. You may have enjoyed a ViA show in the Rattery Village Hall? ViA were successful in obtaining a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to coordinate the Unearth heritage project taking place across two years in eight villages and Rattery is one of the eight! The Unearth project helped villages to explore, share and celebrate their fascinating local history.
Each village will look at the history that is already known and will take part in further research supported by partner heritage organisations – the South west Film and TV archive and the Devon Heritage Centre – to unearth local happenings, stories, customs and traditions, including a focus on any stories connected to each village hall. When the research was completed, the Rattery stories were shared with musicians, actors and artists who worked together to create a multi-media performance piece which was performed in the Rattery on Sunday 10 September 2017.
